We’re all about the interiors at TML, but sometimes you need to bring the outside in. We’re not going full Chelsea Flower Show, as keeping some plants alive can seem impossible unless you’re Alan Titchmarsh. But plants have been shown to reduce stress, great for guests unwinding in your SA, and improve air quality, keeping communal spaces in your HMO feeling fresh.
No haughty taughty horticulture here, just simple ways to bring plants into your spaces and make your competition green with envy (sorry).
What plants are hard to kill?
Hardiness is key when selecting plants for your property projects. We know that you won’t be able to spend hours watering, feeding and pruning each week so bonsais are definitely out, but there are a few that will live on loved or unloved.
What plants work for you?
Some plants not only look great but also work for you and make your life easier. One of these is the Boston Fern, which will sit very happily in your bathrooms and suck up all the moisture and grubby stuff from the steamy air, helping to keep your bathroom mould and condensation free.
Peace Lilies are basically little air purifiers, so you don’t need to buy any fancy filtering gadgets. These plants are so good at getting gross stuff out of the air your tenants may breathe in, NASA studied them and confirmed they get rid of a long list of nasty chemicals. You’ve also got the added bonus of getting really beautiful flowers too.
Plants that just look great
Sometimes things are just there to look great. Whatever interior style you’ve gone for in your project there will be a plant that injects some more life into the room. Some of our favourites (that are still easy to care for) are the Chinese Evergreen - with vivid pinks and purples mixing in with the green of the leaves. The Ponytail Palm adds height and drama with lots of delicate, light green strands. Finally the Stephanotis, with beautiful white flowers and glossy leaves.
Plants that aren’t real
If you really think you’ll still be the death of any plants you buy but you want to bring in the gardeners world aesthetic then you can buy fake plants. Previously, artificial plants looked about as real as a £15 note, but now there are some excellent choices on the market that don’t cost a fortune. The main place which is absolutely killing it in the un-killable plant space is IKEA. They have a great range and the quality is excellent given the price.
We hope your thumbs are a little greener now and you can bring some beautiful plants into your projects. We’d love to see your properties in full bloom over on our instagram
